VILANO BEACH, Fla. -- A 12-year-old boy is recovering after being rescued from the Vilano Beach surf Thursday night.

A woman flagged down a deputy with the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office on beach patrol around 6 p.m. and pointed out a person in the water near the jetties who appeared to be in distress, according to a release from the SJSO.

Deputies approached the jetties and saw a boy being taken out to sea by the current and yelling for help. One of the deputies on scene removed his duty belt and equipment, grabbed his life vest from his patrol car and entered the surf.

The boy was about 40 to 50 yards away from the shore, but deputies and a man with a surf board were able to reach him and bring him to shore.

The boy and two of his friends who were able to get out of the water on their own were treated on scene for minor injuries.
