JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The head of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Gang Investigation Unit said there are almost 50 documented gangs in Jacksonville, with a total of about 800 members.
"It's just like any big city, we have gangs, it's not a major issue," said Lt. Derrick Lewis.
Lewis says the well known gangs like Bloods, Crips, and MS-13 are in the city. There are other smaller gangs, like the 45th Street Gang.
"They're all over the city, all over town," said Lt. Lewis.
While some recruiters target schools, Lewis said it's up to parents to know the warning signs. He says gang members post on social media frequently. They're also known to write notes and symbols on books and tablets.
"They want to be seen and heard," said Lt. Lewis.
Despite the numbers, Lewis said the gang issue in Jacksonville is under control. "Absolutely," Lewis said.
