JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man reaching for his cell phone while driving was involved in a crash Wednesday that sent two people to the hospital with serious injuries.
Andrew Shrum, 37, was driving a Chevy Silverado west on Normandy Boulevard near Cecil Field shortly after 3 p.m.
Shrum suddenly swerved into the eastbound lane of Normandy and struck a car head-on that was carrying Miles Diehl, 61, and Amy Diehl, 25, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Shrum told FHP investigators he was reaching for his phone when he veered into the wrong lane.
Miles was taken to UF Health with critical injuries and Amy was transported with serious injuries.
Shrum suffered minor injures in the crash.
Shrum, a Middleburg resident, faces charges of driving with a suspended or revoked license, failure to use a seat belt and driving on the wrong side of the road.
