ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- St. Johns County is home to beachgoers, history buffs as well as those who really needed help battling addictions.
"We have had appointments every day," Greg Wolf said Wednesday. He is the Nurse Manager at the EPIC Recovery Center, a detox and rehab facility in St. Augustine.
It's only been open for 90 days. It's the first facility of its kind in years in St. Johns County.
"Oh there was a tremendous need," Wolf said. "The number of patients we have are more than we even projected."
In just 90 days, EPIC has seen 134 patients coming in with drug and alcohol addictions.
"We are seeing so many people through our doors. About 90 percent come from St. Johns County," Patti Greenough explained. She is the CEO of Epic Behavioral Health, which oversees the recovery center.
On any given day, the beds are 75 to 95 percent full.
Now comes word that another rehab facility is getting established in St. Augustine. Spencer Recovery out of California has its eyes on the old Brooks or St. Johns Healthcare Center on San Marco Avenue, according to the city's building director.
"We heard about that, yes," Greenough smiled. She said she's not sure what services they plan to offer, but said if it's more long-term residential treatment, that may be something St. Johns County doesn't have right now.
"We do short term residential, 30 days," she stated.
First Coast News placed a call to Spencer Behavioral in California, but had not received a return call by news time.
Greenough hopes that the two facilities will be able to work together to help people overcome addiction, and something Wolf says is really beginning to happen.
"People are telling us they've gotten the help they needed," Wolf noted, "and so far we have quite a few success stories!"
