Investigators believe they might know who hit, killed three-year-old
PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A person of interest has been identified in a hit and run that left a young child dead.
It happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at U.S. 17 near Reed Bell Street in San Mateo.
The victim has been identified as Morgan Wallace Calaway, 3, of San Mateo.
Sgt. Dylan Bryan with Florida Highway Patrol said Wednesday Calaway was in the care of a relative at a residence when somehow the two were separated.
Bryan said it is not known how Calaway ended up in the roadway.
Bryan said it's unclear from which home the child left. He said the child was at a home either on the property of San Mateo Church of the Nazarene or at a home next to the church property.
First Coast News called the church for clarification, and the person who answered the phone said the family did not want to comment at this time.
The child was struck and killed by a 2008 white Honda Accord that authorities later found at a home a little further south, according to Bryan.
Several witnesses have been interviewed, which Bryan said has led investigators to a possible suspect.
No arrests have been made.
The Accord was traveling northbound on U.S. 17 south of Reed Bell Street. Calaway was pronounced dead at the scene.
Anyone who has information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
