JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A father is in jail after his toddler son was found standing in a pond near a Westside church on Wednesday night.

Matthew Ryan Deen, 22, is charged with child neglect, possession of not more than 20 grams of marijuana and use of drug paraphernalia, according to a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrest report.

Donald Grandchamp was attending church service at Acts2 Church at 8595 103rd Street when he went outside to smoke a cigarette and saw Deen's child standing naked in the pond.

Grandchamp went to collect the child from the pond, but the child ran away toward 103rd Street. He was able to catch the child before he ran into traffic.

According to the arrest report, the child was examined by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and found to be in good health.

After canvassing the area, officers responded to Ken Road, where they found Deen to be sleeping on a couch with the door open. Officers woke him up by tapping on the door with a flashlight.

Deen told officers he lives at the house with his wife and that he has a child, then "looked around disoriented and stated 'the baby was not in his crib,'" the report stated.

Officers then found a bag of marijuana and a pipe with residue sitting on the stove. The child was released to the mother, who was at work during the incident.

The Department of Children and Families was contacted. John Harrell with DCF says they will work closely with law enforcement on this case.
