PALATKA, Fla. -- A man was rescued Monday afternoon from a Walmart retention pond on State Road 19 after he crashed his 2002 Mercury through a fence and landed in water.

The car sank, but 68-year-old Ronald Register of Hawthorne was pulled from the water, according to a release from Palatka Police Department Asst. Chief James Griffith.

Witnesses told police that the car was driving along the front of the store when it accelerated, slowed down, accelerated over the curb, went through the fence and 25 feet into the pond.

Curtis Smith, 28, and another unidentified man went into the pond to unbuckle Register and pull him from the Mercury, as the vehicle was sinking and Register was in danger of drowning, Griffith said.

Register was transported to Putnam Community Medical Center and is listed in good condition. PPD Corporal Todd Davis is investigating the accident.
