JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An Arlington man says he's fortunate a speeding car did not run into his bedroom Sunday morning as he was sleeping.

Tim Smeggil woke up when a car crashed into the fence of his house along McCormick Road around 8:15.

Smeggil learned that the driver of the car smashed into the left side of a van traveling along McCormick Road, then lost it's right front wheel and ran up into his property. The driver of the car then got out and fled the scene.

"If my crepe myrtles weren't here he could have plowed into my back yard, into the magnolia tree, then into my bedroom. It could have been a lot worse," Smeggil said. "I hope they catch him. Hitting an innocent vehicle and running away is not right."

Smeggil says police told him that the rental car was overdue and the driver left an ID in the car so they know who he is.

A Russian couple was in the van and told First Coast News the driver of the car was driving at least 60 miles per hour or more.
