JACKSONVILLE, Fla.-- Florida Governor Rick Scott announced Monday more funding to help JAXPORT.
Scott promised $2.6 million to improve the Blount Island facility and another $20 million from the Florida Department of Transportation to help build a new intermodal transportation facility. Another $10 million for the project will come from the federal government.
The project will create 340 jobs during the construction phase of the project and 780 jobs once the project has finished by the end of 2015. Upon completion, the port will have the ability to load containers on trains making the port more competitive.
Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown also named a 13-person task force to build community support for JAXPORT's future. The task force will examine priorities, as well as a thoughtful conversation with the community about the deepening of the harbor.
The task force will be headed up by co-chairmen John Baker and Hap Stein
