JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens welcomes a giraffe calf and graduates two giraffes to new homes.
The male calf was born February 13 at 12:30 a.m. weighing 119 pounds and 5-feet, 4-inches tall.
"It's wonderful to celebrate another new zoo family member," said Dan Maloney, deputy director of conservation and education at Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. "Each addition is precious to us, and we look forward to watching him grow and develop throughout his lifetime, either here or at another accredited zoological park."
The Zoo also celebrated two graduations for giraffes Babe and R.B., who will be moving to new homes Wednesday morning. Babe was born Jun. 30, 2012 and R.B. was born January 11, 2012.
The relocation of the animals was recommended by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species Survival Plan, said a Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens press release.
The Zoo has had seven calves born in under four years.
