PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. -- A jury of six people took only 23 minutes to find Elmer Bowman, 47, guilty of both counts against him Wednesday.

Those counts are kidnapping and sexual battery on a person older than 12 with a deadly weapon or physical force likely to cause bodily harm and causing serious injury.

Details of a case that involved alleged torture and kidnapping unfolded this week in a Putnam County courtroom.

Prosecutors argued that Bowman hog-tied, tortured, beat and forced a 25-year-old woman to perform sexual acts for 18 hours.

They say it happened at his home near Pomona Park in 2011.

Prosecutors said Bowman kidnapped her near Daytona Beach, held her at knife-point, and drove her to his home on Strawberry Lane.

The woman testified in a Putnam County courtroom Tuesday. First Coast News does not typically identify the alleged victims of sexual battery and assault.

Detectives found a video at Bowman's home in which Bowman forced another woman to perform sexual acts. Wednesday, jurors saw that video and heard the woman testify.

The defense presented no witnesses. Wednesday, the jury was dismissed for lunch and started deliberations. In less than 30 minutes, they returned a guilty verdict.

Bowman faces 25 years to life in prison.

The State Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that it plans to seek a life sentence as well as chemical castration.

Tuesday, a rape crisis nurse, Margaret Underwood, testified it appeared the victim was tied up, burned with cigarettes and clamps were used on her body.

Photos were shown to jurors, showing what Underwood called "ligature marks" on the victim's neck and wrists.

"This shows some object was tied around her neck and it was tight enough that it left a mark," Underwood said.

Bowman's jail cellmate, James Callahan, testified Bowman told him about the incident.

"He told me he picked up a prostitute in Daytona. They went to his house, tied her up," Callahan continued, "forced her to do meth and beat her with PVC pipes…and that she escaped from his house , went across the street to the neighbor's house, and called the cops."

In 2011, First Coast News reported that a Sheriff's Office report indicated that Bowman, 44, told the deputies he "never thought this would happen," and that he was just trying to get some companionship that evening. He said he saw the woman walking on the side of the road and felt sorry for her, so he offered to take her home so she could wash her clothes, take a bath and eat.

Tuesday, as Bowman was on trial for charges of sexual battery with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, and inflicting bodily harm, First Coast News found his parents at the home where the alleged attack took place. They declined to comment.
