JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed early Thursday morning.

The crash happened around 6:35 a.m. in the 10100 block of Old St. Augustine Road. The victim has been identified as Robert W. Bentley III.

Lt. DJ Valentine with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said it is still early in the investigation, but it appeared Bentley was going South on Old St. Augustine Road when a garbage truck was leaving the apartment complex at Augustine Green Court. The driver of the garbage truck failed to see the Bentley and pulled into the path of his motorcycle, according to JSO.

Bentley was pronounced dead at the scene and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The State of Florida does not require a motorcyclist to wear a helmet, however, it could save a life.
