JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department may now be able to hire 67 more firefighters thanks to a $5.9 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The grant has to be approved by the Jacksonville City Council. The funds must be appropriated within 30 days and the positions must be filled within 90 days, according to a release from the city.

"This new federal grant allows us to fill 67 vacancies in our Department for the next two years. By filling these positions, JFRD will be better able to provide timely and efficient emergency services to better protect the people of Jacksonville," said JFRD Director and Fire Chief Martin Senterfitt in a release.

The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant will allow JFRD to provide salaries and some benefits for newly hired firefighters for two years.

Additionally, the JFRD is opening a new fire station on Bartram Park Boulevard on Thursday morning.
