JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A surprise homecoming to the First Coast -- ends with a proposal.

Robert Carlson, a 25-year-old soldier, arrived at Jacksonville International Airport this morning with other soldiers after being deployed in Afghanistan for ten months.

His arrival was a supposedly a surprise for his long time girlfriend -- so was the engagement ring he pulled out when he asked her to marry him.

Carlson's mother Tina Carlson said having her son home and gaining a daughter-in-law is the best Mother's Day present she could hope for.

"I'm so happy, I'm so proud of all of our soldiers. They've been through so much in Afghanistan and we are thankful for their service," Tina Carlson said.

"I'm just speechless. And I was just happy to see everyone and and this has been a really long nine, ten months and missed the city," Robert said.

Carlson says his deployment was a big test for his relationship with Julia, but he knew that she was the one.
