JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A man accused of killing a toddler in his care appeared in court Tuesday morning. Devonte Baker, 20, plead not guilty to a charge of murder and aggravated child abuse.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office charged Baker with murder after the 2-year-old he was accused of abusing died from her injuries.Baker was allegedly watching a toddler on December 14 when family members returned to find the child unresponsive.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Baker originally told police the child was injured when she slipped in the shower. However after giving JSO several different stories, Baker said the child was crying when she hit her lip in the shower. That's when he allegedly shoved the child and she hit her head on the floor, according to JSO.

A report from JSO stated Dr. Reznicsek told detectives, "The degree of injury was not proportionate to the mechanism of injury."

Baker allegedly did not seek medical attention for the child when she became unresponsive and was arrested on December 15 when he and the child's family member brought the unresponsive child to St. Vincent's Hospital.

Baker is currently in the Duval County Jail on a $1,000,003 bond. Baker's next court date is February 19.
