ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A barge with a backhoe on it working to dredge the marina near the Bridge of Lions is sinking.
The barge has a leak in it and has gradually started to sink Tuesday morning, according to Jim Piggot with the City of St. Augustine.
The barge is owned by F and A marine, a subcontractor for the dredging project.
The barge has been working to dredge the marina since February. The barge was in place for dredging Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Efforts are underway to save the barge so it can be repaired.
Workers are hoping the outgoing tide will make their job of saving the barge easier.
The project the barge is working on is to restore the depth of the city marina since silt has settled in and made the waterway more shallow.
