Teacher beats cancer through positivity and support from this school.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- "People kept telling us it will either make or break your relationship and it definitely made our relationship," told Lynn McGiveron.
The happy family time around the breakfast table almost never happened for the McGiverons. Just two years into their marriage, Mark began to feel extremely tired.
"So we took a long weekend and I didn't feel any better," tells Mark.
Doctors diagnosed him Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma and he immediately began treatment. With cancer comes skyrocketing costs.
"The hospital bills accumulated and the doctors bills accumulated fast," said Mark.
That's where his amazing students stepped in to help! Though Mark could not be in the classroom, his Fletcher Middle School students raised more than $19,000 for him.
More than the money, the encouragement and love is what helped keep him stay positive.
"I think my attitude was what carried me and the support of Fletcher and the beaches community, it was something else," Mark said with a smile.
Now Mark is in remission, he and his wife got another blessing after his treatment, they are the proud parents of twins!
"Looking at them everyday is a reminder that he survived and that is one of the awesome things about them," told Lynn.
He is also back in the classroom teaching his math students, not just plus and minus, but that everyone faces tough battles and your attitude and outlook on life can make all the difference.
"He is just full of life and he lives everyday," told Lynn,"because there was a point in time he almost wasn't here."
