JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- North Shore Elementary school was evacuated Friday afternoon due to reports of heavy smoke.
According to Tom Francis, with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department, the call came in at 2:24 p.m.
Once the fire crew arrived they confirmed that the fire was near the air handler and extinguishers were used to put out the fire.
JFRD said it appears to be an HVAC issue, however, this incident is still under investigation.
JFRD is working with the Duval County School Board to reunite parents with children.
The affected classroom is not in use as of Monday and the air conditioning unit is being repaired, according to Duval County Public Schools spokeswoman Marsha Oliver. The students and teachers have been relocated to an alternate classroom until further notice. The repairs are expected to be complete before the end of the week.
