JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An off duty officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office nabbed an alleged purse snatcher.

A 77-year-old woman's car had broken down near the Whole Foods shopping center at Hartley Road and San Jose Boulevard, according to JSO, when 24-year-old Donaven Brown, knocked on her passenger window, asking if she was okay. When the woman rolled down her window, Brown allegedly snatched the woman's purse out of her car and took off running. The elderly victim attempted to chase Brown.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Officer Isaiah Fields was driving by off duty, in plain clothes, driving his personal vehicle when he saw the elderly victim and stopped. Officer Fields gave chase down Hartley Road on foot and was able to call for help. Additional JSO officers arrived and surrounded the nearby Ramada Inn just as the off-duty officer and a citizen took Brown into custody, JSO detailed. Brown took officers to the area where he dropped the purse and was transported to the Duval County Jail.

The 77-year-old victim was able to positively identify Brown as the person who stopped to assist her, then snatched her purse from her vehicle.

Brown is currently in the Duval County Jail and is facing charges of occupied burglary to a conveyance and resisting an officer. Brown is scheduled to appear in court June 3.
