ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- Fourteen men were arrested Monday and Tuesday for posing as contractors in Operation "Piece of Cake."

One man was also arrested on a Clay County warrant and possession of cannabis and paraphernalia, according to a release from SJSO Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw.

The suspects who falsely identified themselves as contractors were found through advertisements for their services.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office last week set up appointments for estimates at a home off of State Road 16, Kelshaw said. The suspects then returned bids by the end of last week and were arrested when they showed up at the home to do the work on Monday and Tuesday.

Kelshaw said consumers can verify professional licenses with the DBPR online at www.myfloridalicense.com, by calling (850) 487-1395 or by downloading the free DBPR app through iTunes or the Google Play store.

Unlicensed work is illegal and can result in misdemeanor or felony charges if an individual is convicted, according to Kelshaw. Floridians are asked to report any suspected unlicensed work by email at: ULA@dbpr.state.fl.us or calling the unlicensed Activity Hotline at 1-(866) 532-1440.
