JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly doused a dog with gasoline and then lit the dog on fire.

Devron Quarterman, 21, is charged with cruelty to animals and is being held on a $2,500 bond, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office inmate search.

Quarterman's mother told police he was the only one playing with the dog in the front yard of a home in the 5100 block of 110th Street when she heard the dog crying loudly.

When she came outside, she saw the dog rolling in the dirt. When she touched the dog's fur, it came off, looked burnt and smelled like gas, Quarterman's mother told police.

Officers found a lighter in Quarterman's pocket and a gasoline container in the front yard of the home.

Quarterman is scheduled to appear in court on May 20.
