The mother said she asked Fichter to meet and said Fichter told her she had no regrets and was in love with her son
Lakeland, Florida -- On Monday night, a Lakeland English teacher was arrested at her apartment and charged with having sex with her 17-year-old student.
Lakeland police say 29-year-old Jennifer Fichter taught students at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy in Lakeland off Medulla Road.
In the arrest affidavit, it said Fichter and the victim would meet at various places for sex, including the parking lot of the Reserve Apartments and another meeting place off of New Tampa Highway.
Fichter could also face charges in Hillsborough County and Polk County.
The mother of the victim said she became suspicious when she woke up and her son wasn't at home. She spoke with him and then started to monitor the text messages on his cell phone. That's when she discovered the alleged sexual relationship between the two.
The mother said she asked Fichter to meet and said Fichter told her she had no regrets and was in love with her son. The mother contacted an attorney and then called police.
Debbi Carter's 16-year-old son attends Central Florida Aerospace Academy and she knows Fichter. She was visibly upset when reporters told her about the allegations. Carter said, "It's scary, you know, when your children are in an institution like this. I know they can't ever investigate a person 100 percent, but you think your children are safe at school."
Carter described the teacher as, "Very professional. A good teacher. Very thorough."
O.T. Holden also has a son attending school at the aerospace academy. He said, "It just breaks my heart. There's something that's not right there. They're not mature enough to handle relationships like that especially with someone that's an influence in their life like a teacher. I think it could be -- it is detrimental."
Manny Rodriguez is the personnel investigator for the Polk County School District. He said Fichter was employed by the district to work at Kathleen High School on August 29, 2011. She eventually asked to be transferred to the aerospace academy where she earns $40,530.00 a year. Rodriguez said she has no history of disciplinary problems.
But another mother whose 17-year-old son is in Fichter's class said she always had a feeling like something just wasn't right with Fichter. She told 10 News that the teacher was "more flirty than you would think teachers would be."
Detectives say Fichter started the relationship with the teen last November and texted the boy and had sex with him in the backseat of her vehicle. The sexual encounters, they say, took place 20 to 30 times. Investigators say Fichter even became pregnant with his child but had an abortion.
Tuesday evening, Fichter remained in jail. The superintendent has suspended her and recommended that she be fired. Polk County School Board members will make the final decision when they meet again on April 22nd.
