LUTZ, Fla. -- A former amateur and professional boxing champion with ties to the Bay area was arrested Saturday night on a fugitive warrant issued by authorities in Nevada.

Antonio Tarver, 45, was arrested by a trooper with the Florida Highway Patrol and booked into the Pinellas County Jail just before midnight.

He is being held without bond on an insufficient check and theft charges filed by law enforcement officials in Clark County, Nevada.

According to his arrest report Tarver resides in Lutz. A search of the Clerk of the Court in Clark County indicates the charges against the former boxer were first issued in June, 2013.

Tarver is a former light-heavyweight and cruiserweight boxing champion of the world. Tarver, whose nickname is 'Magic Man', built an impressive amateur record before turning pro. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and he captured gold medals in the 1995 World Amateur Championships and the 1995 Pan Am Games.

He is the only amateur boxer to have won the Pan Am Games, the National Championships and the World Championships in the same calendar year.

In 2006 Tarver played Mason 'The Line' Dixon, the heavyweight champion of the world in the Sylvester Stallone film Rocky Balboa.

Tarver last stepped into the ring in 2012 and has a professional record of 29-6 with one no contest in the 36 fights. Most recently he worked as an analyst on professional boxing matches for Showtime.
