Tampa, Florida -- The man who pleaded guilty to tricking his pregnant girlfriend into taking a pill that can cause an abortion turned himself in to begin serving his sentence.
John Welden arrived at the federal courthouse in Tampa around 9 a.m. Wednesday. On Monday he was sentenced to 13 years and eight months in prison.
The 29-year-old was originally accused of slipping his former girlfriend an abortion pill and killing her unborn child, but the judge dismissed the more serious count of first degree murder.
Court documents show Welden pleaded guilty to consumer product tampering after obtaining a bottle of the abortion drug Cyrotec, replaced the name on the bottle with the antibiotic Amoxicillin and tricked then girlfriend Remee Lee into taking them.
Welden must also pay $28,541 in restitution and three years of supervised release after his sentence is served.
