SARASOTA, Fla. -- A young child is safe, thanks to the quick actions of two Sarasota police officers.

Officers Dominic Harris and Steven Fergus were on patrol Wednesday when they noticed several women holding a 2-year-old child upside down. They stopped and were told the toddler was choking on chicken bone.

While Fergus called for help, Harris began performing the Heimlich maneuver on the baby, to dislodge the bone.

The child began to breathe again, but not very well, so Harris continued the Heimlich while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The child was taken to the hospital and underwent surgery. Police say the toddler remains in the hospital, but is expected to make a full recovery.
