PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A 2-year-old child was fatally shot in the head Saturday off Fairfield Drive in West Pensacola, Escambia County officials said.

Emergency Medical Service personnel responded to a duplex on the 1500 block of South Fairfield Drive near the intersection with Eliasberg street at about 10:25 a.m. to find the child, a boy, dead on arrival, Escambia County spokesman Bill Pearson said.

"I heard a pop this morning, but I just thought it was a car backfiring," neighbor John Jeffers said. "But then we saw the police cars swarm in."

Exact details remain unclear, but the incident is being investigated as an "accidental shooting," according to Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Deputy Delarian Wiggins.

"Right now, it's still under investigation so we don't know whether there will be any charges to come," Wiggins said. "Once they finish their investigation, more information will be put out."

By early Saturday afternoon, sheriff's deputies had taped off half of the squat brick duplex and could be seen interviewing a visibly distraught man and woman in the front yard.
