Chevrolet is turning up the PR anticipation machine for the unveiling of the 2014 Corvette on January 13, 2013. In a new YouTube video, the gauge cluster is shown for a few frames, clearly showing a digital display.
But if you're fan of analog-style gauges, all is not necessarily lost. While I don't claim to know, I'm betting the new Corvette will adopt a growing industry trend that allows drivers to decide which information and style they want displayed on their gauge cluster.
GM has already debuted just such a system at Cadillac. The XTS allows drivers to choose from four different displays via a 12.3-inch LCD screen that replaces traditional analog dials.
"Most drivers fall into one of four different categories in terms of the amount of information they want to see at any given time, so we built the XTS gauge cluster layouts to appeal to any one of those drivers," said Scott Martin, senior creative designer in charge of building the digital cluster layouts in a news release.
In the case of the XTS, drivers can choose between a balanced display, which is the default cluster that shows a traditional analog layout. Drivers can also pick a performance layout that shows a bigger tachometer and performance-driven information such as tire pressure.
Two digital readout displays are also among the choices that are selectable from the steering wheel.
Want one more reason to believe Corvette might have something similar? The new arch-rival SRT Viper will have a reconfigurable cluster display. And if you think it will be years before this sort of technology filters down to everyday cars, think again.
The Dodge Dart features a reconfigurable Thin Film Transistor (TFT) display as an available option that uses the same technology that will grace the 2013 Viper.
