INTERLACHEN, Fla. - A woman shot in a deputy involved shooting early Monday morning has died.
An unidentified 61-year-old woman who lives in the 100 block of Twin Lake Grove Drive called 911 between 3:30 and 4 a.m. Monday complaining of a suspicious person outside her home, according to Putnam County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Hancel Woods.
A deputy responded to the woman's home, checked out her property and found nothing suspicious. The woman called dispatch and again reported hearing someone outside her home. Dispatch assured the woman she was hearing the deputy, who went to his patrol cruiser and activated his lights to show he was at her house investigating. The deputy left the woman's home after going through the process of making sure the area was secure.
A short time later the woman called neighbors complaining of a suspicious person outside her home and neighbors called 911. Dispatch sent two deputies to respond to the same home in the 100 block of Twin Lake Grove Drive. When deputies arrived they started going through the process of making sure the area was secure and the 61-year-old woman approached them in her driveway, armed with a shot gun and opened fire on the deputies.
Deputy Thomas Burger, a two year veteran with the PCSO, returned fire. The PCSO said the incident appears to be a justified shooting.
The unidentified woman was transported to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville for treatment, where she later died.
Per protocol, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting.
