UNION COUNTY, Fla. -- One of the sons of the late Sheriff Jerry Whitehead will officially take over his father's post on Friday.

Brad Whitehead, 37, will be sworn in as Union County Sheriff at the Union County Courthouse on Friday afternoon, according to a release from the Union County Sheriff's Office.

The younger Whitehead's appointment as Sheriff was announced by Gov. Rick Scott on Wednesday evening. Whitehead will serve the rest of his father's term, which ends November 4.

Major Gary Seay had been serving as interim sheriff since the elder Whitehead's death from cardiac failure on December 18.

Previously, Brad Whitehead served as a detective for the State Fire Marshal's Bureau of Fire and Arson Investigations and as an Assistant Warden for the Florida Department of Corrections.
