ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office was able to catch an alleged car thief using a helicopter and some infrared technology Friday.

A search began after deputies responded to a car crash in Flagler Estates, but found no driver, according to to SJCSO.

Deputies found evidence the driver of the vehicle was injured so officers and K-9 units searched the nearby area and requested assistance from its helicopter, SJCSO's Air 1.

Air 1 arrived on scene and began a search using FLIR, a thermal imaging system.

Within minutes, Air 1 was able to locate the male suspect, according to SJCSO.

He was treated for injuries and has been charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle.
