CRESCENT CITY, Fla. -- According to the Florida Highway Patrol, one child died and four children, all under the ages of seven, were injured following a fatal crash in Putnam County Sunday morning.
FHP responded to the crash at the intersection of Clifton Road and U.S. 17 at approximately 8:55 a.m.
Gerard Buchan, 74, of Crescent City had come to a stop at the intersection of Clifton Rd. and US. 17. Buchan attempted to drive his Ford Explorer westbound across US 17 when he failed to yield to a Dodge Caravan that was driven by 29 year-old Ashley Thomas who was headed southbound on US 17.
Buchan hit Thomas's Caravan on the left side, sending it off the southwest shoulder of the intersection.
There were five children in the van with Thomas, Rontrell Thomas, 6, Ron Neisha Thomas, 6, Nykeirah Thomas, 7, A'Veonna Thomas, 4 months and 3-year-old Nayana Thomas.
Thomas and all five of the children were transported to Halifax Medical Center.
Nayana Thomas was pronounced dead at the hospital.
According to the FHP report, Buchan did not have any injuries following this accident.
FHP reported that neither the children nor Thomas were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
Charges are currently pending.
At this time FHP reports that speed was not a factor in this crash.
