GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash in Clay County involving a Clay County Sheriff's patrol car Saturday night.

It happened on County Road 209 north of Green Cove Springs right before 9 p.m. near Sandridge Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol says two crashes happened at the same location. A primary accident involved two vehicles. Then, a secondary accident on the same road involved the deputy's patrol car.

A silver Hyundai was traveling north and a red Dodge was traveling south on Russell Road. One of the vehicles crossed the center line collided head-on, according to FHP. After the crash, a patrol vehicle from the Clay County Sheriff's Office hit the silver Hyundai.

Two drivers in the primary accident are dead.

FHP identified the deceased victims as Stacey Renee Peternel, 37, driver of the red Dodge from Green Cove Springs and Shanice Sadi Johnson, 23, driver of the silver Hyundai from Middleburg. The Sheriff's office says the deputy has minor injuries.

Lillian Johnson, Shanice's mother, said Shanice and her two year old daughter were returning from visiting family in Green Cove Springs when she was involved in the accident.

"Oh God, I couldn't believe it. I just literally wanted to pass out. It's unbelievable. Just waiting for someone to come home and they never come home," said Johnson.

Shanice was scheduled to leave Monday with her child to live in New Jersey with some of her extended family, Johnson said.

"Shanice was a fun loving person, always smiled. She get serious at time, but she was just like a child in a grown up woman body with a little bitty voice," added Johnson.

FHP says each primary accident vehicle had one passenger. The patrol car had a total of three people, the deputy, an arrestee and a civilian riding-along. Those passengers were transported to Clay Baptist Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Johnson says her 2-year-old granddaughter was released from the hospital Sunday. FHP said the child was secured in a car seat.

Alcohol results are pending, according to FHP.
