JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It's a frightening story with a strong message. One Jacksonville woman warns others to be careful while out late at night.
Many people like to celebrate and party during the holidays, but it's important to be aware of your surroundings and be extra careful if you decide to have a drink.
"You can go out, you can go party and you can drink. And you can come home with two toes missing," said Margirae Peek.
She now relies on crutches to get around. Peek says in the early morning hours of October 19th, her life was forever changed.
"I decided to go out with some of my friends to enjoy myself, have some drinks and someone slipped something into my drink," said Peek. "And I basically had to fight for my life at the end of the night."
Peek says when she woke up she was in a daze, surrounded by strange men in car with a gun pointed at her head.
"I jumped out of a moving car," said Peek.
According to a police report provided by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Peek couldn't tell them exactly how she ended up at the gas station when questioned. The officer noted that her two toes were severed, and she was taken to Shands Hospital.
While Peek believes she was drugged, the report only states that she was intoxicated.
"I never thought this would happen to me," said Peek. "I never thought that night that I went out to have fun to have a couple of drinks and chill with a few people I knew, that I would not come home that night. I wouldn't come home until five days later with a part of my body missing."
Peek says while jumping out of the moving car it kept on going and she lost her two toes. Now she warns others to be vigilant, pay attention and make smart decisions.
"It's not just a body part that's missing, my heart is hurting," said Peek. "I have to struggle everyday with being scared."
Peek says she hopes that by sharing her story she could possibly prevent this from happening to other young women.
According to JSO the investigation is ongoing.
