BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A Southeast Georgia defense contractor had a big role in designing and building components for the USS New York that will be make its homeport in Mayport.
PaR Marine Jered has two facilities in Brunswick and invested two years of work in the project.
The ship's steering system, cargo weapon elevators and the deck bridge crane are among the systems fabricated in Brunswick.
"That kind of helps with the pride thing with our employees," said Ronald Merrill who is the Vice President of operations speaking about the ship being located on the First Coast.
Glenn Healy is one 150 employees who had a hand in making components for the USS New York.
"It is always a real treat to step back when done testing it, things complete and say I have done this," said Healy.
The defense contractor plans on taking employees to Mayport so they can see first hand the finished product.
Work is far from finished as the defense contractor has another project on its hands, the USS Portland.
