JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 'Chance' is one of two dogs rescued from a hotel room where police say several animals were found dead earlier this month; now he is ready for a new home and a better life.
Two-and-half weeks ago, 'Chance' was just skin and bones. He had very little muscle mass after he was found severely emaciated, locked in the bathroom of a hotel room at the Super 8 off Youngerman Circle. A police report says he was covered in feces and urine.
"It's heartbreaking to think an animal can be treated that way," said Amy Pierce of the Jacksonville Humane Society.
'Chance' and a female boxer mix were the only two survivors. Several other dogs were found dead wrapped in plastic. Police arrestedDenise Jimenez, 40,and Seanty Jimenez, 21,for animal cruelty.
"This is an animal who has been through so much abuse and he is just loving, loves people, and has a great time and he has forgiven all that abuse and is really just looking for a new home," said Pierce.
Piercesaid Chance was part ofa group of dogs transferred over from Animal Care and Protective Services. The second survivor is still at animal control for treatment.
"She had been living in a crate for about three weeks we were told," said NikkiHarris, shelter manager, ACPS. "Never let out of the crate during that time, so she was very very afraid when she first got here."
Harris said the dog was at the point of starving before she was rescued.
"She probably would not have lasted much longer without our intervention," said Harris.
Now, she's a playful one-year-old boxer, still working on gaining weight, but on a path to a better life just like her co-survivor, Chance.
The two women arrested in this case are due in court the first week of December.
First for you, the boxer mix won't be available for adoption for another few weeks, but Chance is ready to be a part of your family. If you'd like to adopt him all you need to do is go to the Jacksonville Humane Society on Beach Boulevard and meet with the adoption counselors.
