SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Authorities in Savannah have released the identity of a marathon runner who collapsed and died near the finish line.
Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say 35-year-old Jake Zeman of Columbia, S.C., died after falling ill during Saturday's Rock 'n' Roll Savannah Marathon.
Race medical director P.Z. Pearce said the death was a difficult and tragic situation, and that event officials are asking everyone to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers.
Organizers say 14,700 runners were at the starting line for the main 26.2-mile race and a half marathon.
The men's full-marathon winner was 23-year-old Eric McDonald of Groveland, Mass., with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 47 seconds. The women's winner was 23-year-old Alyssa Kulik of Columbia, S.C. Her time was two hours, 53 minutes and nine seconds.
