JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens announced on its Facebook page Friday that 12-year-old black jaguar Salsa died unexpectedly.

The cause of her death is not yet known and is being investigated. She appeared to be fine when the zookeepers checked on her during the morning routine.

When they came back to check on her, they found she had died. "An underlying condition" is suspected as her cause of death, as no external trauma was visible on Salsa.

Salsa was born at the Baton Rouge Zoo on Oct. 7, 2001. She came to the Jacksonville Zoo two days later with her sister Onca.
