FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida deputy has found cocaine worth an estimated $700,000 floating in the ocean off Dania Beach.

The Broward Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that the marine patrol Deputy James "Brad" Lemieux spotted what appeared to be a burlap bag about a mile offshore on Sunday. Inside the bag were 25 individually wrapped, 1-kilogram bricks of what field tests confirmed was cocaine.

The cocaine is being turned over to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. It wasn't immediately clear how the bag of cocaine got there and no one has been arrested.

Lemieux's main job at the BSO Marine Patrol involves manatee protection duties. Broward Sheriff Scott Israel says the discovery is a reminder that drug traffickers still use Florida's long coastline.
