DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - An armed carjacking forced the closure of a stretch of northbound Interstate 95 in Volusia County on Wednesday after a shootout led to the death of the alleged culprit.

Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies requested the closure at mile marker 256, near Port Orange. One lane was reopened by 1:30 p.m.

The robbery took place at the Heritage Inn in Daytona Beach. Authorities were looking for the culprit, who was believed to be driving on the interstate, and a chase ensued.

Authorities said the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Luke Castello, was driving a mini van that crashed into a tree. Shots were fired and Port Orange Police Department officers opened fire on Castello. He was killed.

The carjacking victim was not injured, officials said.

The Sheriff's Office and police departments from Daytona Beach and Port Orange were involved in the investigation.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents were called to look into the police-involved confrontation.
