St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Baltimore Orioles All-Star Manny Machado exited Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a potentially serious injury to his left leg during the seventh inning.
Machado was rounding first base on a single when he stepped awkwardly and had his left knee buckle as he fell to the ground. Play was halted for several minutes as the Orioles' training staff attended to the young standout third baseman and eventually removed him from the field on a cart.
The 21-year-old had gone 2-for-4 with a run scored prior to departing.
Machado's 2013 campaign is almost certainly over with Baltimore having just six more regular-season games following Monday's tilt. The former first-round draft pick leads the American League with 51 doubles and hit .283 with 14 home runs, 71 RBI and 88 runs scored.
