Sgt. Dylan Bryan said Esther Ohayon, 57, and her 16-year-old daughter, Orly Ohayan, were hit by a car at approximately 7:59 p.m. Friday night.

Ohayon died at the scene and Orly was transported to UF Health of Jacksonville where she remains in critical condition. The other pedestrian was not hurt.

Michael Fortunato, the driver of the car, stayed at the scene. FHP is still investigating to see if alcohol or a traffic violation were factors.
Our news partners, The Florida Times-Union, spoke with Rabbi Yaakov Fisch, Rabbi of Etz Chaim Synagogue and Fisch noted the dangers of crossing the street, particularly for the Orthodox Jewish faithful who on the Sabbath can't use any form of technology.

Fisch told the T-U that he reached out to Representative Charles McBurney of Jacksonville about three months ago asking if the intersection can be set to provide longer times to cross the street during the Sabbath. Fisch said he never got a reply.

Donna Rodriguez, an employee of a nearby restaurant, said she was at work when the accident happened told FCN this is a very dangerous intersection.

"I got cold chills when I saw it. This is a bad intersection, yeah we got a red light, but it's a bad intersection, even for us coming out from work. It's not enough time crossing from the synagogue over back to home and going from home to the synagogue, it's not enough time for them to cross at all."

FHP said this in an ongoing investigation and cannot comment on whether or not the driver will be facing any charges.

UPDATE: Orly's cousin Karen Brown started a fundraiser on FundRazr.com for Orly and the family. As of Sunday night, 190 contributors have raised over $9,500 in seven hours. Anyone wishing to pledge can go HERE.

UPDATE: Sunday 9:48 p.m -- Orly Oyahon has been upgraded from critical to stable condition.
