JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Public safety places the biggest demand on local tax dollars, but finding a way avoid deep cuts has city council wrestling with options.

Fire Chief Martin Senterfitt told council members a $20 million increase is needed in spending to avoid closing three fire stations and rolling fire station closures on a daily basis.

Senterfitt says the department is 106 firefighters short which is causing overtime costs to skyrocket.

The proposed budget for JFRD is $183 million.

The council is divided on whether hiring firefighters or paying overtime is the best solution.

Discussion about pension costs also are entering discussions on whether hiring people is a prudent option.

Sheriff John Rutherford has yet to present his spending plans.
