TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -A longshot effort to force a special legislative session on Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law has failed.

State lawmakers were polled to see if they would support the session. Eighty-three had voted "no" as of Wednesday night.

Supporters of a session needed support from at least 96 of the 160 members of the Legislature.

Democratic lawmakers put together enough votes to force the poll but fell far short of gathering the votes for a special session.

That polling tactic has been tried before in Florida, but it has never succeeded.
