BOKEELIA, Fla. -- For the third time since April, a young Florida child was seriously injured after being accidentally run over by a riding lawnmower.
The latest incident happened Sunday, when a 3-year-old Bokeelia boy was after he fell off a scooter and his foot slipped under a riding lawnmower at his Trout Road home.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office reported that the boy suffered a severe injury to his right foot, which was sliced halfway through by the blade on a John Deere model riding mower. The mower was backing up at the time, driven by John Steiner, 31.
The report says Steiner is the boyfriend of the boy's mother, Amber St. George, 26.
The sheriff's report said the boy's foot was wrapped in a dish cloth and he was sitting in the kitchen sink when a deputy arrived. The boy was transported to Lee Memorial by Med Flight. Further information was not available.
Just last Friday, a 4-year-old girl was run over by a riding lawnmower in Hardee County. The girl of Bowling Green is currently in fair condition at Tampa General Hospital.
And in a story that made national headlines back in April, 2-year-old Ireland Nugent was seriously injured after her father accidentally ran her over.
Nugent lost both of her feet in the accident, and has since been fitted with prosthetic limbs as she continues her recovery.
