(WXIA) -- Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White tweeted an apology Sunday morning for a Saturday night tweet, which instructed the jurors in the George Zimmerman murder trial to "go home tonight and kill themselves."
After Saturday night's court verdict acquitting neighborhood watch member George Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of teen Trayvon Martin
The decision sparked emotional reactions the world over, and many athletes were stunned by the verdict. Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was particularly vocal, advising the jurors to "kill themselves."
@RoddyWhiteTV [DELETED] Zimmerman got away with murder today wow what kind of world do we live in
@RoddyWhiteTV All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid
@RoddyWhiteTV It's crazy how people on twitter want me to get in trouble for a tweet that they are retweeting because they want something to happen thanks
Hundreds tweeted responses to White's missives, many of them taking him to task for his comments about the jury, who, as many of them said, were only doing the job they were tasked with.
White had a different tone Sunday morning, tweeting out an apology for his statements Saturday night.
@RoddyWhiteTV I understand my tweet last nite was extreme. I never meant for the people to do that. I was shocked and upset about the verdict. I am sorry.
There has been no comment about White's remarks from the Falcons.
