Tampa, Florida -- Update: A City of Tampa traffic advisory sent around 8:20 p.m. says crews are still investigating the cause of what they're now calling a "cave-in" on 138th Ave.

According to the advisory, the six-foot wide gap is over a 36-inch gravity sewer pipe located on 138th Ave. east of Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

As a result, officials say westbound 138th Ave. is closed, and drivers in the area should follow the marked detours currently in place. It will remain closed until further notice, so drivers who are able should avoid the area altogether and seek an alternative route if possible.

As the investigation into the cause of the "cave-in" continues, crews will also begin planning a repair strategy. In the meantime, officials say local residents will not experience an interruption in sewer service.

Previous information:

A possible sinkhole has opened up underneath 138th Ave at Bruce B. Downs Blvd in North Tampa.

A car was actually on top of the pavement when the hole began opening. The driver accelerated off the road, damaging her tires from the broken pavement, but got away uninjured.

Deputies currently have the west bound lanes of 138th Ave closed. The hole has been described as approximately six feet wide and approximately 30 feet deep.

10 News will update this story as more information becomes available.
