Prosecutors in Indian River County will continue to build their case against an 18-year-old woman accused of having a sexual relationship with a girl in a case that has received international media attention.
A press release from State Attorney Bruce Colton says that Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, and her attorneys did not accept a plea agreement that the state offered through today. She is accused of two counts of lewd and lascivious battery of a person 12 to 16 years old. Trial is tentatively scheduled for mid-July.
Hunt, 18, allegedly had a sexual relationship late last year with another girl at Sebastian River High School. The other girl was 14.
Hunt's parents, including her father who lives in Palm Bay, have launched a social media campaign to get prosecutors to drop the charges, saying the same-sex relationship was consensual. Hunts parents and several advocacy agencies have accused the Indian River County sheriff's office and prosecutors of targeting the girls because they were a gay couple; however, officials denied those allegations.
