Marrakech, Morocco (Sports Network) - On-the-mend Estonian Kaia Kanepi suffered a second-round upset, while former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone secured a quarterfinal berth at the $235,000 Moroccan Grand Prix.
Luxembourg's Mandy Minella upended the fourth-seeded Kanepi 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the clay-court tennis event. Kanepi returned to the tour two weeks ago after being sidelined for six months with a heel injury.
The sixth-seeded Italian veteran Schiavone humbled two-time Moroccan Grand Prix runner-up Simona Halep 6-3, 6-2. The Romanian Halep reached back-to-back finals at this event, in Fes, in 2010 and 2011.
Fifth-seeded and defending champion Kiki Bertens continued her winning ways in Morocco with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-0), 4-6, 6-4 victory over Italian veteran Flavia Pennetta.
The Dutch Bertens bested Spaniard Laura Pous Tio in last year's finale, in Fes.
Meanwhile, seventh-seeded Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic leveled Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3 and Spaniard Lourdes Dominguez Lino doused ninth- seeded Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
One other second-rounder saw Spaniard Silvia Soler-Espinosa dismiss Russian Olga Puchkova 6-0, 6-3.
Friday's quarterfinals will pit third-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet against Schiavone; Bertens versus Dominguez Lino; Mladenovic against South African Chanelle Scheepers; and Minella versus Soler-Espinosa.
