Fort Myers, FL (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox released veteran first baseman Lyle Overbay on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old signed a minor league contract with Boston prior to the start of spring training, but managed only nine hits in 41 at-bats over 19 games.

In 2012, Overbay split time between Arizona and Atlanta, combining for a .259 average with two home runs and 10 RBI over 65 games.

Overbay, whose most productive seasons came with the Toronto Blue Jays between 2006-10, holds a lifetime .270 batting average and has amassed 133 home runs with 581 RBI over the course of his 12-year career.
