PITT COUNTY, N.C. (WESH) -- A Lakeland mother was in a Pitt County, N.C., courtroom to face charges of trying to get her children to kill their paternal grandparents.
The grandparents have permanent custody of the children.
Warrants said Silva solicited the 7- and 9-year-old to commit felony murder against Ramon and Maria Silva.
Deputies said the children revealed that their mother had mailed them a knife to be used in the scheme.
The judge told Silva her $5 million bond would not be reduced. She opted to use a court-appointed attorney.
Silva's boyfriend and parents were at the first appearance and said the charges are based on a lie, but they would not elaborate without a lawyer present.
Detectives say Silva has a history of drug offenses and lost custody of the girls in April 2007.
She is due back in court on March 25.
